It makes everything that was originally great about Sleep even better. Years later, the trio gave Dopesmoker the deluxe-reissue treatment, excavated archival songs that were never released, and issued a decent single through Adult Swim.
All the while, Sleep nabbed pay-dirt slots on festival bills and toured big clubs, teasing the arrival of a new album—someday. Even when they posed dinner plates of weed atop mixing consolesthose promises felt like self-signing permission slips, allowing Sleep to continue making new money with old songs. The essential trick of The Sciences —and the reason it feels like more than an overdue cash-in—is these 40something dudes have managed to grow up without growing old.
It is a twin ode to volume and weed that makes everything that was originally great about Sleep even better. In their own bands, Cisneros and guitarist Matt Pike have progressed to more adult concerns. And since the start, Cisneros and his band OM have been a sort of spiritual search-craftnavigating a tangle of religious iconography and mystical koans. During the last decade, though, they have allowed themselves to slip fully back into Sleep, like old college buddies escaping to a cabin for a weekend retreat of booze, joints, and limited responsibilities.
Feeling stoned yet? But Sleep have never played so audaciously or so well as they do here. Elsewhere, his riffs are lean and elegant, curved like the chrome fenders of a classic motorcycle. And since joining the band after those initial ATP comebacks, drummer Jason Roeder has become an essential influence. This is a revelatory new philosophy for Sleep. At their worst, they turned into embarrassing reminders that our heroes can be greedy misanthropes. That record, of course, launched a stunning second phase for Dinosaur Jr.

Sleep Release First New Album in Over a Decade: Listen
Kyuss ' partner in crime in creating the Stoner Rock genre. Ozzy Osbourne went on record as saying Sleep were the closest band he'd heard to Black Sabbath's original 70s style and feeling. Along with 2nd guitar Justin Marler, the band released "Volume One" in Marler departed the band afterwards and the remaining trio recorded the group's follow up album, "Sleep's Holy Mountain" the following year.
The album is now considered one of the most seminal releases in the "stoner rock" genre. This led to the band signing a major label deal with London Records. The label financed the band's next project, which was a single track called "Dopesmoker", which ran 63 minutes. The band informed the label that they had no intentions to edit the track nor tour behind it, as they were breaking up. London balked at the idea of releasing an album that contained a single, hour-long song.
The band recorded a second version, this one clocking in at 52 minutes and re-titled "Jerusalem", but London shelved the release and the band split. Inthe Music Cartel released "Jerusalem" and 4 years later, Tee Pee issued "Dopesmoker", the latter of which tended to be considered the "definitive" version by many fans although the band members expressed displeasure with both versions.
Sleep's legend grew in the years following its split and in Pike, Cisneros, and Hakius reunited to perform two sets at All Tomorrow's Parties. Data Quality Correct. Reviews Add Review. Bands seen Live by onetwothreeclimb. Favorite Artists by 11able.

Critic Eduardo Rivadavia describes them as "perhaps the ultimate stoner rock band" and notes they exerted a strong influence on heavy metal in the s. However, conflict with its record company contributed to Sleep's breakup by the end of the decade.
The band reformed in and has played sporadic live dates internationally since. Asbestosdeath expanded to a quartet with the introduction of Matt Pike on guitar, and recorded two singles - "Dejection" for Profane Existence and the self-released "Unclean".
Asbestosdeath recruited Justin Marler as replacement and the band adopted the new name, Sleep. Their debut album Volume One was released in Frequently compared to bands like Saint VitusSleep soon gained a devoted fanbase within the developing doom metal scene. Marler quit the band soon after to take up life as a monkleaving the band as a power trio for the recording of their Volume Two EP, which was released officially by Off The Disk Records in The band's next album was sent to the independent label, Earache, as a demo.
Sleep's Holy Mountain is widely considered the seminal album in the evolution of stoner metal. Around this time, Earache released its first Black Sabbath tribute album, and Sleep contributed a cover of " Snowblind ". Under their new contract, Sleep began work on their third album, Dopesmokerin London Records declared the album unmarketable and refused to release it.
They had it remixed, cut up into sections by David Sardy, which led to a deadlock with the band, Sleep being unhappy with the result. Frustrated and generally unhappy with the situation, the members of Sleep decided to disband. InSleep released Jerusalem as an "official bootleg". Finally, in the original version of Dopesmoker was officially released by Tee Pee Records. It is generally considered the definitive version of the album. Sleep's surprise-released The Sciencestheir first album in at least a decade-and-a-half. There's no reason to toke up all of your time with silliness when you could be nodding your head slowly to Sleep 's first album since Dopesmokerconsidered by many to be the high-water mark of stoner-metal epics. Its release date is something of a rabbit hole — if you're interested, here.
After teasing new material a little over a year ago in the most Sleep way imaginableThe Sciences is here. Their non-response was unhelpful, but not wrong: "There is no preconceived idea of what the new material should be.
It would be an amalgamated effort of decades of riff immersion. So yeah, it sounds like Sleep. Rumbling riffs rolled up into your chosen weed metaphor, seeking enlightenment through repetition. It's "Antarcticans Thawed," though, where Sleep captures what I experienced live at the Club two summers ago, projecting and concentrating a hypnosis that expands universes. Pike and Cisneros are on a new playing field — those aforementioned "decades of riff immersion" truly paying off — but the band's new drummer, Neurosis ' Jason Roeder, offers both a surprising amount of space and hard-boiled aggression to the album highlight.
It features not only one of Pike's most unhinged guitar solos, but also Cisneros unmooring the bass from the main riff with melodic counterpoint. This is Dopesmoker Beyond the Thunderdomea lawless, yet demanding exploration of Sleep's stock-and-trade, and hopefully just the hazy horizon of riffs to come.Sleep - Dopesmoker

We started tripping out and second guessing ourselves. Pike noted that they ended up with two or three different versions of the song. In the aftermath of the breakup of the band four versions of the album were released. The version of the album titled Dopesmoker was released on April 22, by Tee Pee Records on compact disc and vinyl with a minute running time.
The rights to the record had reverted back to the band and Cisneros wanted to breathe some new life into the old beast. Southern Lord was overwhelmingly ecstatic about the challenge of taking the reigns of one of the most important recordings in the history of Heavy Metal!
The biggest difference between this new version and the old releases is the phenomenal remastering job by From Ashes Rise guitarist Brad Boatright OFF! His vision was to enhance the original recording without changing it drastically. What he has done makes this epic opus sound invigorated, more powerful with more clarity and all around unbelievably mammoth.
His work was enthusiastically approved by the band and considering how focused, vigilant and protective of their masterpiece the band is, that is nothing short of a miracle!
The booklet features newly penned liner notes by the band helping shed some new light on this holy grail of a album. Sleep reformed in and now includes Jason Roeder of Neurosis on drums.
